Close up of the Muse - Calliope with a sphinx on either side. A Sphinx or (Phix)  was a female monster with the body of a lion, the breast and head of a woman,  eagle's wings and serpent headed tail. Decorative sphinxes (in the plural) also commonly appear  on archaic Greek vases, and architecture.
